Antique Victorian Motto Sampler
This inspirational punched paper motto work most likely dates from the turn of the 20th century. The saying reads “He Leadeth Me.” The thread colors are shades of red, pink, green, gold and cream. Hooked through the “a” of the word “leadeth” is a shepherd’s crook, and nestled beneath, is a sweetly rendered primitive lamb. The work is framed in a wood (walnut?) frame with the original wood back. Frame has black beveled edges, and wood is “faux” marbleized. The size of the piece, including the frame is 22 ½” by 10”.
Condition: Very good to excellent. Some wear to the frame; creases to punched paper motto. Thread color is strong; no breaks in thread; minor soiling to punched paper background. The photograph shows shadows and is not indicative of the soiling.
